Wherever or Whatever You are Looking At, That’s Where You Will Go

When I first learned to ride a horse many years ago, I had a number of frustrating moments. My horse kept heading in a different direction than I wanted us to go. A cowboy gave me the following cowboy logic: “Your hands go wherever you look. Your body follows your hands. And the horse follows your body.”

A horse is very sensitive. It can sense a fly on its hide. So, a horse senses even the slightest of our body movements: eyes looking, hands following, and our body ever so slightly shifting.

This cowboy “truth” hits home for many of us, even for those who don’t ride a horse. That is, if you are frustrated that you are headed one direction but your life seems to be headed in another, ask yourself, “What am I really looking at, internally or externally?

We move in the direction of what we are looking at. The problem is that sometimes we think we are looking in a direction (expectations) but our real expectations are hidden, unknown to us. Then life, like the horse, takes us in the direction of where we are truly looking. At that point, we can either awaken to our real expectations, or we blame the “horse” (life) for taking us in the wrong direction! I don’t know about you but I’ve done my fair share of “horse-blaming” throughout my life. Doesn’t work too well.

Like the cowboy said, if you think you are headed in one direction and your horse (life) is going somewhere else, check out what you are really looking at.
